You can test Telstra's fastest Upfront NBN plans for $1

At the moment Telstra will only charge you $1 for your first month on its NBN 100 and NBN 250 plans, so if you’ve been wondering what life feels like in the fast lane, this is a low stakes way to find out.

In the past signing up to a plan with Telstra would mean that you committed to paying the full modem cost unless you stayed for longer than 24-months. It kind of put a damper on those ‘no-contract’ plans. Now however, Telstra’s Upfront NBN Plans let you send back your modem for free if you decide to switch telcos.

If you don’t send the modem back then you’ll get charged a $200 no-return fee, but if you remember to ship it back then you can test out a fast speed tier for just a dollar. No strings attached.

After the first month the prices will revert back to normal, being $110 for the NBN 100 plan or $140 for the NBN 250 plan. Neither of these are the most affordable options out there - Telstra being Telstra they’re on the upper premium end, but here are the most popular NBN 100 plans in our database right now for comparison.

Despite being expensive, both of the participating plans advertise the highest available typical evening speeds on each speed tier. Customers can anticipate achieving download speeds of 100Mbps or 250Mbps, even during the busiest and most congested hours of the day.

Currently Telstra is the only telco offering 250Mbps download speeds on its NBN 250 plan. Origin Broadband is close behind at 248Mbps, and Aussie Broadband sits in third with 243Mbps. Both these providers offer cheaper monthly rates too, so if you’re happy to sacrifice a handful of Mbps then they’re viable options
