NBN Co has revealed the top 10 data-hungry suburbs in Australia finding the City of Playford in Adelaide, South Australia to be home to the biggest data users with an average of 562GB in March 2023.
That's the equivalent of streaming Netflix in HD for 250 hours or 833 hours of video conference calls.
Here are the top 10 most data-hungry Local Government Areas:
| LGA | Average data usage |
|---|---|
| City of Playford, South Australia | 562GB |
| Logan City, Queensland | 559GB |
| City of Kwinana, Western Australia | 557GB |
| Port Hedland, Western Australia | 548GB |
| City of Blacktown, New South Wales | 546GB |
| Ipswich City, Queensland | 546GB |
| City of Melton, Victoria | 542GB |
| Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, Western Australia | 541GB |
| City of Karratha, WA | 528GB |
| City of Liverpool, New South Wales | 526GB |
The average data usage across the country is now up to 445G a month. The NBN network carries 87 per cent of Australia's download data and usage is higher now than it was during the pandemic.
NBN Customer Experience Expert Jane McNamara said two-thirds of NBN customers haven't changed their NBN plan over the past three years.
"Technology has advanced, data use on the NBN network has tripled in six years – but has your plan kept up? We encourage customers to check with their internet provider to see if the plan they are using has enough speed and data inclusions," said McNamara.
Unlimited data on an NBN plan is the norm these days but if you're on a plan with a data limit it's worth comparing your options. NBN 50 plans are suitable for most households of one to two people and prices start at a bit over $50 per month (including promotional discounts).

According to McNamara over 691,000 people downloaded more than 1000GB over the NBN network in March and the average Aussie household now has around 21 connected devices.
If that sounds like you you might want to consider whether you're getting the fastest speeds possible for your NBN speed tier or whether it might be time to upgrade. An NBN 100 plan is ideal for larger families, gamers and anyone using multiple devices on one connection at the same time.
Of course, if you have the right NBN connection type you could get even faster speeds with an NBN 250 or NBN 1000 plan.
