Vodafone 4G: crowdsourcing an early verdict
Vodafone launched it's 4G network across capital cities and a few major regional hubs last week, and invited WhistleOut to trial the new network. As much as we appreciate the opportunity, running speed tests on a single device in the city we operate in isn't the best way to see how well the network is performing. Luckily, plenty of Australians were ready to help.

Vodafone Australia today announced that 4G services have been activated in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Newcastle and Wollongong, with plans to triple its 4G footprint by the end of the year. The fast mobile broadband service is available now to existing Vodafone customers with compatible mobile devices, with plans for new customers to launch next month.
Vodafone Shutting Down 3 For Good
The end is nigh for Australian mobile provider 3, as Vodafone has finally announced its shut down date for the network. The 3 brand in Australia will officially be farewelled on the 30th of August, meaning any existing 3 customers will need to abandon ship before the network is switched off.
Optus broadband dumps excess usage into affordable 1GB blocks
Optus today announced big changes to its mobile broadband offering, ditching per megabyte excess usage charges in favour of 1GB blocks. With the new plans, customers choose a monthly data allowance as usual, but if they exceed this data level they are automatically allocated an additional 1GB for an extra $10. Further data blocks are added to the account as needed, up to a maximum of 20GB extra in a single month.

Optus Network Event, May 2013
Optus held a network event today in which it announced its recent 3GPlus accomplishments and outlined plans for 4G expansion in the near future. NBN to Set World-Leading Speeds
The NBN is set to achieve world-leading download speeds of 1Gbps by the end of 2013, equalling Google Fiber’s achievements in Kansas, US. 1Gbps is around the upper limit of the current fibre to the premises/home (FTTP/FTTH) architecture of the NBN. While the speeds are frankly astonishing, most users really won’t see the benefit for years to come. The current max speeds of 100Mbps that the NBN is offering is more than enough for even the most bandwidth hungry personal user with today’s online services available in Australia.
Exetel Unlimited NBN Plans
Exetel has made an announcement that will have many Australian Internet users excited - unlimited NBN plans! Of course there is the restriction that the unmetered data allowance is only available in off peak times between 1am - 9am each day, but none the less it's a move in the right direction.
New Rules for Mobile & Broadband
Browsing for a new mobile phone or broadband plan? With the introduction of new guidelines from the Australian Communications and Media Authority, you may find it easier to understand and compare plans and providers - at least in theory. As part of the ACMA's revised Telecommunications Protections Code (TCP), all telecommunications providers are now required to include a two-page ‘Critical Information Summary’ to customers that clearly outlines the charges and inclusions of each plan.
