Aussie Broadband today launched a new range of SIM-only phone plans powered by the Optus network, including a range of 5G-ready options.

Aussie Broadband is only the second Optus MVNO to introduce a range of 5G plans since the provider opened up the next generation network to its wholesale partners. SpinTel is currently the only other Optus-powered provider who offers 5G on its mobile plans. As with SpinTel, Aussie Broadband does not include 5G as a standard feature on all plans. You'll need to pick from select plans to get 5G access. These are as follows:

  • $39 per month: 10GB
  • $49 per month: 50GB
  • $69 per month: 80GB

These plans also include unlimited talk and text, and are contract-free. The 10GB plan has $300 of credit for international talk and text, while 50GB and 80GB plans both have $500.

At $39 per month, Aussie Broadband has the second cheapest 5G-ready plan on the market. Vodafone and SpinTel both have cheaper options. SpinTel's plan also has a 10GB allowance, while Vodafone's has 40GB. Vodafone's plan is however only $35 per month for your first year, after which it will jump to $40 per month. Optus' cheapest 5G plan is now $45 per month with 20GB, thanks to plan changes yesterday.

Of course, 5G access does rely on having Optus 5G coverage in your area. From our 5G speed testing, we'd expect customers in metro areas should be able to get average download speeds of around 500Mbps on the Optus 5G network.

Aussie also has a range of 4G-only SIM-only plans. If you're an existing customer, you can get a higher data allowance by bundling with your internet plan. These plans are as follows:

  • $15 per month: 1GB, 2GB for existing customers
  • $19 per month: 2.5GB, 5GB for existing customers
  • $29 per month: 15GB, 25GB for existing customers
  • $39 per month: 30GB, 40GB for existing customers
  • $49 per month: 50GB, 60GB for existing customers
  • $69 per month: 80GB, 100GB for existing customers

All plans include unlimited talk and text, and the $49 per month plan and $69 per month plan both include $50 credit for international talk and text. The plans are contract-free. Both existing Aussie Broadband customers and new customers can get their first two months free on any of the telco's 4G plans.

Aussie's 4G plans are hard to recommend for anyone who isn't an existing Aussie Broadband customer, given the data-per-dollar is out of step with other providers on the Optus network. Even with bonus data for existing customers, the plans aren't overly competitive. Fellow Optus MVNO Moose Mobile is currently offering 20GB for $16.80 per month for a customer's first year, which rises to $23.80 per month. Circles.Life has a 100GB plan for $30 per month for the first year, and $38 per month thereafter. Dodo is doing 36GB for $30.

In short, the main benefit of getting a 4G Aussie Broadband plan is being able to put it on the same bill as your internet.

Aussie Broadband has confirmed it will begin selling smartphones on a plan later this month, starting with the Samsung Galaxy S21.

Aussie Broadband mobile plans were previously powered by the Telstra network, but it recently made the change to Optus, citing the ability to add 5G to its mobile plans as a key driver. Aussie also intends to offer 4G internet backup in the coming months.
