- Does what it says on the tin
- Long battery life
- Solid sound quality
- Initial learning curve
- Perhaps a bit too pricey if you only fly occasionally
The AirFly Pro 2 is one of those gadgets that does what it says on the tin, and does it well. If you're not familiar with the original, the AirFly Pro 2 is effectively a dongle that lets you use wireless earbuds or headphones in-flight entertainment systems.
The main differences this time around are better audio quality, easier pairing, support for two pairs of headphones at once, and volume control buttons. Enhanced audio alone is a solid pitch, but the improved usability makes the AirFly Pro 2 a little less fiddly.
That’s not to say using the AirFly Pro 2 is always simple. The dongle doesn't have a screen, so you rely on various flashing lights for most functions. To pair wireless earbuds or headphones with the dongle, you need to first turn on pairing mode on the AirFly Pro 2, and then on the headphones. And look, it's kinda weird pairing headphones to a device without a display. If successful, the pairing light will stay on for ten seconds, but the AirFly Pro 2 is the kind of device you'll want the manual for.
The battery status indicator is similarly arcane. The single LED turns amber when charging, but then switches off when done. This made me question if the AirFly Pro 2 was even getting power. I would have expected it to turn green, or something, as with most other devices.
If you want to check battery, you can double-click the volume up button. Four amber blinks mean it's full, three mean it's at 75% and so forth. It's simple enough to learn all of this, but it isn't necessarily intuitive out of the box.
What I'm saying is don't throw out the instructions.
The good news is, after you've worked this all out, using the AirFly Pro 2 works as you'd hope. They sound good, and my AirPods would instantly re-pair to the AirFly Pro 2 even if I paused my in-flight movie and put the headphones away briefly.
I did experience an odd issue once where I had to rotate the dongle to get audio in my left ear, but that could have also been a consequence of the travel adapter I had the AirFly 2 Pro plugged into. There's a deluxe version that comes with a travel adapter in the box, but by default, the AirFly Pro 2 just has a standard 3.5mm jack.
Battery life is also solid, with Twelve South saying it will last up to 25 hours. That's more than enough for long-haul transit.
While ostensibly designed for flights, the AirFly 2 Pro is pitched at not just being for air travel. You can also set it to receive audio, which allows you to pair your phone to it, then plug the dongle into a car or speaker with an aux port but no Bluetooth. While Bluetooth is pretty ubiquitous, a little bit of extra versatility doesn't hurt.
AirFly Pro 2 - Final Thoughts
The AirFly Pro 2 is a great buy for frequent flyers who prefer using wireless headphones. It could be a little more intuitive, but otherwise, it works very well. At $89.95, it isn't pocket change, but the pricing isn't egregious either - especially if you're on planes regularly.
If $89.95 feels too steep, Twelve South also sells a cheaper AirFly SE for $59.95. The SE model has a slightly shorter battery life, worse audio quality, only supports a single pair of headphones, and doesn't work as a receiver, but it should still do the trick for many.
