November is the sweet spot between the spookiest and the most cheerful seasons of the year. So there's plenty to either catch up on or started binging early (if you haven't already been ticking Christmas films off your watchlist already).
Each month, this guide is updated by our editorial team who sift through the new releases and continuing series to decide which streaming services we think are the best of the best for the month, based on the popularity of their content offering.
How we chose the best streaming services
We judge the best streaming service on a monthly basis, depending on the new and continuing TV series and films we're excited to watch.
Each month, the members of the extended WhistleOut editorial team (WhistleOut Australia, WhistleOut Singapore, and Reviews.org) vote for up to five shows or movies coming to major streaming services (Apple TV, Binge, Disney Plus, Dropout, HBO Max, Netflix, Paramount Plus, Prime Video, and Stan).
These votes are then used to pick the best streaming service and two runners-up. This guide ranks streaming services solely on its monthly content offering, rather than considering factors like pricing, features, or technical specifications.
Best streaming service: Prime Video
Prime Video has something for everyone this November; from anticipated new movies to returning and new TV series. Keep reading to see what we're looking forward to the most:
The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power — Season 3 premiere
Tolkien fans assemble, the third and latest season of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power is returning this month.
This season, Sauron assumes his new armoured form, Gandalf levels up as the legendary wizard he will be forever recognised as, Galadriel continues her path towards becoming a wise and powerful elven Lady of Lothlórien while we all fangirl (or boy) over the very moment the One Ring is forged. The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power returns on November 11.
Hokum — Movie premiere
With a bit of 1408 vibes, this film follows horror novelist Ohm Bauman (Adam Scott) who retreats to an isolated cabin (ok so not quite a hotel room) to scatter his parents' ashes. But what he finds there instead is far from a secluded trip about resting in peace.
This psychological supernatural horror is fresh from the mind of the producers who are responsible for Weapons and Barbarian which will become painfully clear even as you watch the trailer. Hokum will be available to watch between your fingers from November 22.
Blade Runner 2099— New limited series premiere
This brand new series stars a fantastic line up, including Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) and Tom Burke (Black Bag).
It is a futuristically stunning attempt to redeem the recent and not-so-popular Blade Runner films yet builds on the premise set out by Ridley Scott's original 1982 film. Blade Runner 2099 will launch its first season on November 25.
Benefits of Prime Video
- 30-day free trial
- Discounted pricing for annual subscriptions
- Exclusive Amazon Originals content
- Access to ad-free Amazon music, e-books via Amazon Prime Reading, select games via Amazon Prime Gaming and free and express delivery on eligible Amazon items
"None of the major streaming services have lock-in contracts, meaning you're free to sign up for a month, binge as much content as your heart desires and then cancel.
"The next time your favourite show is returning on another service, you can sign up for it with the same budget."
Dylan Crismale, Digital Content Editor, WhistleOut
Runner-Up: Binge
Binge has truly stepped up its content offering in recent months, earing it second place for the second month in a row. Here are the new, returning and continuing titles we're excited to see on Binge this November:
The Paper — Season 2 premiere
The mockumentary from the same universe as The Office is clocking back in for a second season this month after over a year later.
After the team's sweeping success at the end of season one, Ned (Domhnall Gleeson) and the team are back for an even bigger and more successful year at The Toledo Truth Teller.
The Paper will return for its second season on November 19.
Dig — New series premiere
Parks and Rec fans can rejoice because coming this month is the latest quirky comedy creation from Amy Poehler and Michael Schur, Dig.
It centres on four women working on a Greek archaeological dig, each desperately trying to navigate their own challenges, while also (literally) uncovering a secret that could launch an international conspiracy. This series stars comedy favourites Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation, Sisters), Antonia Thomas (Misfits), Hugh Laurie (Blackadder, House), Jason Mantzoukas (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Max Greenfield (New Girl).
Dig will be available to stream on a screen near you on November 23.
Yaga — New mini-series continuing
Yaga is a brand new mini-series with strong mystery thriller vibes while entwining with the supernatural.
It follows an overly-curious P.I. who is looking into the disappearance of a young fishery heir. However, he soon discovers he'll not only have to battle the local detective, a charismatic professor, and a whole host of other suspects for the truth but also ancient mystical forces.
You can expect to see Yaga on screen until November 27.
Benefits of Binge:
- 7-day free trial for new customers
- Live channels for even more viewing options
- 4K HD on all but its cheapest plan
- Over 25,000 hours of TV and movies, including original and exclusive content
TPG's Home Fast Unlimited plan is our pick for the best NBN 500 plan for October.
Runner-Up: Disney Plus
Disney Plus takes out third place thanks to its wide variety of content. From reality to docos to fantasy, this streaming service truly does offer something for everyone this November. Here are our top picks for the month:
Wolves Up Close — New documentary premiere
Wolves Up Close is a fascinating insight into the survival and hunting tactics of wolf packs in Hudson Bay, Arctic Canada as they fight to make it through the harsh Winter season.
Presented and filmed by gifted producer and cinematographer Bertie Gregory (Animals Up Close, Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story), audiences will get to immerse themselves in the sub-zero temperatures and the danger of the wild without leaving the safety of their cushy couch. Wolves Up Close will launch via National Geographic on Disney Plus on November 7.
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives: Orange County— New series premiere
This series is the next big binge for fans of The Real Housewives of... and the OG The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives series. This new series will shine a light on the differences between Mormons from Utah as we meet the Mormon Wives from California.
Prepare yourself for raised voices, tears, betrayal, judgement, scandal and plenty of jaw-dropping moments. The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives: Orange County airs exclusively on Disney Plus from November 12.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians — Season 3 premiere
Clearly something is going very right for Percy Jackson as a TV series, compared to the movies, because a third season is airing later this month.
Unlikely team-ups will take place, prophecies will be fulfilled, a goddess will be freed, a curse will be broken and attempts to save loved ones will be made. What's not to be excited about?
Catch Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney Plus from November 20.

Here's a look at the range of streaming services available in Australia:
Are you on the right internet plan for streaming TV?
Streaming is one of the most data-intensive things you can do online so it's important to consider what provider you're with and what plan is best for you. If you're not careful, Netflix, Stan, Foxtel Now or Prime Video can make a serious dent in your bandwidth. But if you pick the right plan, you can binge endlessly without running into issues.
Most services offer up to four quality settings for when you're streaming in your web browser, on your smart TV, or on your game console. These are as follows:
| Stream quality | Data usage (per hour) | Data usage (per 30 hours) |
|---|---|---|
| Low | 0.57GB | 17.1GB |
| Medium (SD) | 1.13GB | 33.9GB |
| High (HD) | 2.89GB | 86.7GB |
| Ultra (4K / UHD) | 7GB | 210GB |
If you're streaming on high, streaming a single feature-length film on Stan, Netflix, Foxtel Now or Amazon will use somewhere around 6GB. Most NBN plans are unlimited now, but you'll still want enough speed to ensure you're not buffering. NBN 50 plans are a great middle-ground option and are still quite affordable and widely available on all NBN connection types.
Below we have broken down the most affordable plans on each speed tier for comparison:
If you just need a basic connection, it could be worth considering an NBN 25 plan. You can expect download speeds of up to 25Mbps and upload speeds of up to 5Mbps. Most online activities can still be done on an NBN 25 plan, but it will start to buckle if you have too many people using your connection.
NBN 50 plans are your best bang for your buck option when it comes to the NBN. They are affordable and are a good option for households with between two and four people. An NBN 50 plan will ensure everyone in your household is able to partake in their favourite online activities, whether it's streaming movies and music, online gaming or video calling with overseas friends and family.
NBN 100 plans are the next logical step if you don't think NBN 50 will cut it for you. You get twice the download speed, meaning your connection will go as fast as 100Mbps. Most NBN 100 plans have upload speeds of 20Mbps, which is the same as what you get on NBN 50. We'd say NBN 100 plans are best for large households or anyone who regularly downloads large files, such as new release video games.
NBN 250 plans are another step up. These plans are a little more expensive than what you'd pay for an NBN 100 plan but are perfect if you've got the need for speed.
NBN 250 plans are only available to those who have a Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial(HFC) NBN connection.
