NBN in Perth

Your favourite band may not ever make it to Perth, but the NBN is here. Officially the NBN rollout in Perth and the rest of the nation was completed at the end of 2020. This means faster broadband is available for all of Perth's residents and businesses. While everywhere in Perth should be able to access the service, the way in which you connect to the NBN will vary depending on where you live.

If you're in an apartment block you might have a Fibre to the Building connection, if you're in a new development, you might be lucky enough to have Fibre to the Premises, or if you're a little more rural, you might have a Fixed Wireless connection.

While at the end of the day, everyone will be connected to the NBN, the technology type that connects you can affect the plans you're able to sign-up for. Fibre to the Premise plans are different to Fixed Wireless plans which are again different to Satellite.

That's why it's important that you run an address check when looking for a new NBN plan, so you can ensure you're comparing the right type of plan.

When will I get NBN?

NBN should already be available where you live or work in Perth, if you're not sure you can check the NBN rollout map.

FTTP upgrades in Western Australian

The vast majority of Fibre to the Node (FTTN) and Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) connections in Western Australia can now upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), for free. For eligible FTTN users, this is done by ordering an NBN 500 plan or faster from an eligible provider. FTTC users can upgrade to FTTP without ordering a faster speed. While speed is the main benefit of FTTP, the technology type is also more reliable and resilient.

The majority of remaining FTTN addresses in the ACT will be able to upgrade to FTTP by the end of 2030. According to NBN Co, these addresses are largely based in the "outback" and the Wheatbelt. There's also a handful of addresses in south wet, north west, and north east Perth still slated for upgrades. 99% of addresses will be able to upgrade to FTTP, while the last 1% may be move to Fixed Wireless or next generation satellite instead.
