Google Pixel 4

The Pixel 4 launch may still be months away, but Google today revealed the first official image of its next flagship handset via a tweet. While the single image doesn't reveal too much about the Pixel 4, it gives us some idea of what we can expect.

One of the biggest changes appears to be that the Pixel 4 will have at least two rear-facing cameras. While many smartphone manufactures have kept pushing camera counts higher and higher, Google held firm with just a single rear-facing camera for every single Pixel to date. In addition to a flash, the sizeable camera module also looks like it includes an extra sensor above the camera lenses. It's possible this could be a time-of-flight sensor for measuring depth, or a spectral sensor for helping the camera handle flickering lights.

In addition, the back of the phone is missing the rear-facing fingerprint scanner we've seen on every Pixel so far. This suggests that Google is moving to facial recognition for biometric authentication, or an in-screen fingerprint reader, or potentially both.

It's hard to garner too much more from a single image, but it looks like the Pixel 4 will abandon the two-tone design used by Pixel devices to date. It's unclear whether the finish will be glossy or matte.

Google's tweet seems to have been made in response to fan-made Pixel 4 renders based on leaked schematics surfacing online yesterday.

We're expecting Google to reveal the Pixel 4 in October, but we'll surely hear plenty more from further leaks in the months to come.

If you can't wait for the Pixel 4, check out our Pixel 3a review in the mean time.
