felix mobile just doubled the speed of its unlimited data mobile plan from 20Mbps to 40Mbps. This makes it almost as fast as an NBN 50 plan, which max out at 50Mbps.
The budget brand's plan is the only truly unlimited data plan on offer in Australia. Rather than charge for excess data or throttle your speed when you use up your allowance, felix's unlimited plan offers a maximum of 40Mbps download and upload speeds at all times.
A spokesperson for felix told WhistleOut, "We’ve doubled the speed on our unlimited data plan to celebrate the doubling of our mobile network footprint, allowing our customers to get more speed at more places than ever before".
Vodafone's coverage effectively doubled in February as it expanded its network to cover over 1 million square kilometres geographically (or 98.4% of the population), thanks to a network-sharing agreement with Optus.
Other providers that offer unlimited data typically offer between 1Mbps and 2Mbps speeds when you use up your monthly allowance. Dodo throttles speeds to a barely usable 256Kbps.
While felix has doubled its unlimited plan's speed, this is still slower than what most providers offer (many offer maximum download speeds of at least 100Mbps), but it does mean you don't have to worry about chewing through all your data in a given month.
If 40Mbps still sounds too slow, then felix's 25GB and 50GB plans have speeds capped to 150Mbps. Once you use up all of that monthly data allowance, plan speeds are throttled to 1.5Mbps. That's just enough to stream music and browse the internet.
Here's a look at felix's mobile plans:
"40Mbps is still slow compared to other telcos in the market, but the shift shows a commitment to bettering the user experience, and it makes for a more compelling offer. Especially in a market that thrives on yearly price increases, it is a refreshing pitch."
"I once said that I would switch to felix if it upped its speeds to 50Mbps. You're almost there buddy!"
Here's how felix's 25GB plan compares to other prepaid mobile plans (with at least 25GB of data) in WhistleOut's database:
