Samsung Galaxy S9

The Galaxy S9's headlining featuring is a "reimagined" camera. Samsung says it's good (duhhh). Camera sensor quality tester DxOMark has given the S9+ a score of 99, beating out the Pixel 2 and iPhone X. But just how good is it?

We've had the smaller Galaxy S9 for a day now, and the camera is a noticeable improvement on the Galaxy S8.

Much like a DSLR lens, the Galaxy S9's primary camera is able to mechanically switch between different apertures: f/1.5 and f/2.4. An aperture of f/1.5 is ideal for improved low-light performance, and also creates a shallower depth of field. An aperture of f/2.4 has more depth, for a sharper image.

We were especially curious as to how much difference the variable aperture lens made to lowlight photography, so we took it for an after hours walk around Barcelona's Gothic Quarter. We even managed to avoid getting mugged!

You'll find a couple of photos from our adventure below, as well as some from the Mobile World Congress exhibition centre.

Note that at this stage, we only have a Galaxy S9, not a Galaxy S9+, and as such, haven't been able to test out the S9+ zoom lens or portrait mode. All photos below were taken on auto and have been resized for web.

As aforementioned, we've only had a Galaxy S9 for a short time so far, but initial results seem promising. We'll have more to say in the coming weeks!
